About Me

My name is Amanda and I am a Ph.D. student in Communications, studying science communication. I have an M.S. in Physiology & Neurobiology, where I studied how the brain forms during development. I wanted to start “Illuminated Brain” to share the stories of science. From the innovative research produced by labs around the world, the narratives created from them, and the journeys of the people conducting the science, these stories need to be told. In this blog, I want to translate complex scientific results for a wide-ranging audience, start conversations about science communication/science writing, and share a few tidbits of advice on Ph.D. life.

I also believe that effective communication is a two-way street between the scientist and the listener. So, I do not want my blog posts to be merely sent into the void, please comment or message me! Constructive feedback is always welcome. Let me know which metaphors work, which don’t, and which science puns need to be put on the shelf and retired.
